CURA

A community of Ignatian colleagues supporting one another through prayer, intellectual growth, and companionship.

CURA has been a safe and welcoming place to collaborate with people who take their relationship with God seriously.
— Una, CURA member

CURA is Latin for “Care.”

The Society of Jesus uses two closely related terms:
cura personalis — care for the whole person,
cura apostolica — care of the ministry.

Who.

CURA is designed for busy, mission-oriented people, who have completed some formal training in Ignatian spirituality.

Members lead active prayer lives and have had some initial formal experience of Ignatian formation, such as OIS’s Magis or Contemplative Leaders in Action programs.

Membership is open-ended. Participants are welcome to stay engaged for as long as they want, though an initial two-year commitment is desired.

What.

The program encompasses three areas:

  • Exploring Theological Concepts from an Ignatian Perspective — talks, seminars and discussion of relevant theological and social issues.

  • Deepening Personal Prayer — regular prayer and personal spiritual direction, group retreats.

  • Enhancing Practical Skills for Mission — skill-building workshops in areas related to ministry and leadership development

Where
&
When.

CURA is open to those within the boundaries of the USA East Jesuit Province.

Example of the monthly time commitment (though, each member’s time commitment will vary from month to month):

  • Monthly meetings — one 1 ½ - 2 hour meeting, primarily online.

  • Preparation for monthly meetings — committee work, readings, etc. 1 – 2 hours.

  • Monthly spiritual direction, 1 hour (if not currently seeing a director, a member can be referred to one.)

  • Personal prayer, 30-45 minutes each day.

  • An annual 3-day group retreat.

  • Miscellaneous activities — occasional in-person gatherings by region, service opportunities — time will vary.

Ignatius’ experience shows that care, deeply rooted in his spiritual experience and his mystical journey, offers the true dimension of the unity cura apostolica-cura personalis, dimensions of one single cura, that is, care for mission. This single cura has as its focus persons, communities and works, which are at the service of mission.
