Cultivating an Ignatian sense of spirituality among leaders of the Spanish-speaking Catholic community.
Hispanic Ministry

One of the great challenges facing the American Church is the integration of immigrant communities into the larger Church and societal experience. Our Hispanic Minsitry addresses this challenge head-on.

We offer an extensive spiritual formation program in Spanish to cultivate an Ignatian sense of spirituality among members of the Latino community. We teach ways to establish an intimate relationship with God through prayer and discernment, which helps those we serve to face the challenges that living in a new country brings with it.

Our goal is to foster leaders capable of sharing the richness of their unique gifts and insights with their new community.

We work with Jesuit ministries where Latinos are present and, as far as possible, we reach out to other communities and ministries where Ignatian formation is desired and would be beneficial.

Our efforts are focused in two geographical areas:

  1. New York: Our work in and around New York City area began with the Jesuit parish, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, on Staten Island. Our work now reaches down into parts of northern New Jersey and the Allentown Diocese in Pennsylvania. To the north, we are expanding into Rochester and the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
  2. North Carolina: In North Carolina, we started in our Jesuits parishes in Mooresville (St. Therese) and Raleigh (St. Raphael). We have since begun working into a few diocesan parishes in Sylva and have recently established a pilot program for the Charlotte Diocese. We have also offered several programs in the Jesuit parish, Sacred Heart, in Richmond, Virginia, and conversations have begun with the Ignatius Retreat House in Atlanta.
Our Hispanic Ministry comprises a graduated program of spiritual development, beginning with Days of Ignatian Reflection and Prayer. After this introduction, participants are invited to join The School of Ignatian Spirituality which consists of five, day-long meetings that occur monthly. These meetings are designed to foster and deepen the spiritual life of participants through the Ignatian tradition.

We also offer a series of four Personalized Ignatian Weekend Retreats for Leaders that guide participants through an experience of Ignatian prayer and the discernment of the Spirit’s movements in an enclosed, silent atmosphere. These are typically offered in our Jesuit retreat houses in Morristown, New Jersey, and Faulkner, Maryland.
